The 25th edition of the Karachi Open Students Chess Championship 2011 was held between 28th July 2011 and 31st July 2011, at the UBL Sports Complex. Three students from SMB Fatima Jinnah Government Girls School participated in the Girls category of the competition: Suman Mursaleen, Afshan Bano and Afroz Bano. The event was organized by the Customs Preventive Service Club and also included competitions in the seniors and under-14 boys categories.
Suman Mursaleen won the first round and earned a place in the final round. After an excellent performance in the finals, Suman Mursaleen ended up bagging the third position. Her opponent in the final game was a student of Karachi University.
Suman Mursaleen was awarded a certificate, a cash prize of 1000 Rupees, and a chess kit as a reward for her performance in the tournament.
Zindagi Trust is currently consolidating the school’s chess strength –the school’s chess instructor, Veteran International Master Shahzad Mirza, is training both the games teachers as well as the chess club students. Mr Mirza encourages the teaching of mind sports like chess from an early age, saying it helps develop strong analytical skills in children.
