Celebrating Science at our Schools with PSC

The Pakistan Science Club put up a grand celebration of science at both SMB Fatima Jinnah Government School and at Khatoon-e-Pakistan Government School, in which a total of over 450 students from the senior section participated enthusiastically.

Live experiments and demos, such as threading a straw through a potato or lifting a glass with a balloon (and many more) wowed the students. The "magic" of scientific reasoning behind each of these experiments was discussed and explained in an easy and engaging way by Abdur Rauf and his team of eager student volunteers.

The students then split into groups to work on designing and making robotic arms which had to lift a glass at one school and balloon-powered cars which had to win a race at the other. The day ended with a Coke and Mentos exploding fountain demo and a water rocket launch in the school ground which left  the students in awe.

This activity was part of Alif Ailaan’s campaign to promote better learning of science and mathematics and we hope it goes to every government school. More coverage here.

Following the activity, the management at SMB Fatima Jinnah decided to form a Science Club in school for students to explore their interest, learn more and promote science. The Science teachers of Junior and Senior sections had also attended the event and were inspired by the use of everyday objects to clarify concepts in science in an entertaining way. A meeting of all science teachers was also held later to motivate them to teach through practical demos in their classes. They were asked to help start the Science Club of senior students and organize a Science Exhibition as the first activity within the next two months.
